Coursework (UF)

Global Health Communication (COM4930)

This class was certainly one of my favorite electives at UF. It focused on how communication issues can lead to health disparities all over the world, but how we can use communication to heal those disparities. I learned how important it is for a doctor to take his/her patient's culture into account, because it heavily influences the way patients understand treatment options and how to take care of their health. The class showed me that the way health care providers explain drugs or therapies can heavily influence the choice patients make and that there are preventable diseases all over the world that would benefit from communication improvements.

Language and Power (COM4930)

The open communication this class promoted made it extremely prone to great conversations and taught me about how different ideologies can be revealed from what people say. The power dynamic of society is ever-present and identifiable by the linguistic choices we make. I especially enjoyed when the class discussed language relative to gender, media, ethnicity, and politics.

Campus Life Events (ISP)

Coffee Without Borders

This was the first event I went to, before I knew if I wanted to be an international scholar, but the conversation that was stimulated, paired with the friendly atmosphere won me over. I had a very insightful conversation with a group of exchange students about social media and how our different cultures valued it for different purposes.

Harn Museum Nights

I have attended the Harn regularly for different events throughout my undergraduate time at UF. Several of those events have been dedicated to different cultures I attended Noche de Museo and marveled at the colorful and fun portrayals of hispanic culture. At Art Without Borders I learned about the Guerrilla Girls and the artist's activism of feminism. Night at the Harn: Europe taught me about European music and how it represents not only joy, but struggle.
